Pirate Undertaker, Younger and Older Version By: Yana Toboso
If I’m not mistaken, the younger one was supposed to be from eight years ago, but please check her blog as I only used Google Translate. :’)
OMG SOUSUKE "HIS STORY BEGINS FROM THIS POINT [referring to the scene of him looking at the ocean]" (picture from the latest Spoon 2Di magazine, courtesy of the lovely sunyshore)
Interviewer: Yokotani-san, Hatta-san, were there any scenes that you were concerned about that left a great impression on you?
Hatta-san: There are many scenes with that effect, but one specific scene that speaks to me was in the last episode when Sousuke is looking across the ocean. The reason why is probably…well, when Rin was in Australia during middle school, he went to look at the ocean when things got difficult because he thought about Haruka and Sousuke across the ocean in Japan, and because of that he was able to try his best. However, this time it’s the opposite— Sousuke is now the one who is thinking about Rin as he gazes across the ocean. Even though he might even look pained, I feel like this is only the start of Sousuke’s story, and that in itself has left a very great impression on me.
EXCUSE ME AS I DROWN IN TEARS BECAUSE WOW CONFIRMATION THAT SOUSUKE WAS REALLY THINKING ABOUT RIN (not that he’s not always thinking about Rin to begin with) IN THAT BEAUTIFUL SUNSET SCENE IN THE LAST EPISODE.
Actually, we originally planned to include Rin in the imagery scene when the four Iwatobi members were swimming their relay at nationals, but Rin had his own team, swimming the relay with them, so it felt wrong having him swim with the Iwatobi team, and we left that out. But, for me, both Season 1 and ES together have been a story about the five of them, so without Rin there, it just felt lonely. But we did get to show them all swimming happily together in the sakura blossom pool in the end, so that was a scene I really loved.
